August 2001 Newsletter

Greetings!

Join us the weekend of September 29-30th for NADA/F’s 7th Annual Meeting! Our forerunner, the International Air Disaster Groups (IADG) met for the first time Oct. 17, 1992, so this will be the 10th meeting for our organizations.

Many of us have said that the best part of the Annual Meeting is renewing old friendships, connecting with new members, and the great conversations and fun that we have from morning ‘til night. I always enjoy our introductions on Saturday morning, when we learn more about each other. We are a very interesting group with an amazing amount of energy. As survivors, family members, aviation professionals (active and retired), government officials, members of the press and media, young and old, we learn that we have common goals and want to make a difference for the future.

There is so much to share! This year some of our Guest Speakers will talk about how air crash investigations have changed, what we have learned during the 1990’s, and the tools and momentum that we have today to make a difference in the future.

The Internet has had a tremendous impact on air crash reporting, record keeping, communicating with each other, and more. Presentations and materials will help us maximize our effectiveness with the Internet for the future.

The weekend includes optional FAA and government meetings on Friday, including the “behind the scenes security tour” of Washington National Airport (primarily Friday afternoon).

On Monday our Family Support Team program will be an opportunity to talk about how family support was managed in the past, and improvements for the future. Throughout the weekend we look forward to sharing with you exciting updates about our Family Support Team, and the work NADA/F and others are doing toward better support for victims’ families.

Bill Kauffman (Aerospace Professor from the Univ. of Michigan), and Jim Hurd (TWA 800) have been representing NADA/F on the FAA Fuel Tank Inerting group. As I write to you, the group is completing its work, and will soon present recommendations about preventing another center wing tank explosion, such as the one that caused the crash of TWA 800. Bill and Jim will be able to share with us how our participation has made a difference, from “inside the FAA!” We have ten people representing NADA/F on FAA Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committees (ARAC), including a position and vote on the Executive Committee, the Issue Groups, and participation in the important working groups that are closed to the public. We look forward to expanding our role!

Saturday and Sunday includes our Guest Speakers, and Special Surprise Guests, recognition for those who have made a difference, our business meeting when we adopt NADA/F’s Goals for 2002, elect NADA/F Board Members, and more. To learn more turn the page, and watch for updates on our website. Everyone is welcome!

Gail Dunham, President

June 30, 2001 Dedication of the memorial in memory of Capital Airlines fight 67, April 6,1958...

Bill Reid thanked others and said they were “the guiding light” to help achieve the dedication.

“It has been almost two years since this project began and now it is reality. It has been over 43 years since the tragic crash of the Capital Airlines Viscount and that is time enough to go without some kind of remembrance of the victims. Today, the accent is on remembering those who passed away. This is truly a time of healing and rejoicing, knowing the memorial to Flight 67 is permanent and will be a lasting commemoration to the 47 names inscribed on it.”

Bill Reid and others did a number of important things to personalize the memorial service, such as giving people the opportunity to make comments in memory of their loved one(s). Reid also collected photos of the passengers and copied them to display together on a memory board. The dinner that followed was a special time for fellowship of the group.
Bill Reid - Email: Highflight67@gateway.net (989) 893-2765

Jim and Rosemary Shellberg, founding members, represented our NADA/F family members at the memorial. Their comments have meaning to all of us.

Good Afternoon. My name is Rosemary Shellberg, and this is my husband Jim. We would like to thank Bill Reid for inviting us to speak on this momentous occasion. You are probably wondering why I was asked to speak. There are two reasons. The first one is that we are one of you. We lost our son David, aged 25, on October 31, 1994 with the American Eagle flight 4184 that crashed in a cornfield in Roselawn Indiana. There were 68 souls lost on that flight. The families of 4184 experienced difficulties in terms of where we could place a memorial as you did. The tenant farmer would not agree to terms for the purchase of the crash site. We also were helped by having compassionate people, like Bill Reid. Our angels were a widow, her son, and daughter. They petitioned the Indiana county to get permission to erect a memorial at the side of the road. We have found that many other people like them have come forward to honor our loved ones and help us adjust.

So that leads me to into our second reason for being here. We are representing NADA, the National Air Disaster Alliance. Our mission is to raise the standard of safety, security and survivability for aviation passengers and to support victims’ families. We are based on the following principals:

· To ensure the flying public that the highest standards of aviation safety are established and in effect.

· To promote and establish mandatory post crash planning in all realms of the airline industry.

· To implement and maintain a dedicated team of NADA members to provide family and survivor advocacy and support for all victims of air tragedies.

We are here to give the support of the Alliance and hope you will help us to carry the work forward so that we can help the industry achieve the level of safety that we all deserve.

About a month ago, Jim and I went to Oklahoma to visit our son’s memorial that his colleagues had erected at the University of Oklahoma. On the way home, we stopped in Carthage, Missouri to se the Precious Moments Chapel. During this visit we learned that Sam Butcher, (the creator of Precious Moments figurines), had lost his son in an auto accident. He dedicated a room in his chapel to his son’s memory. On the wall, above a book of remembrance, was a plaque that really struck me. I think it might be nice to share with you on this occasion because I think the sentiments are appropriate.

“We find comfort in realizing that no one, whom we have truly loved, is ever lost to us. We carry them with us in our hearts, and in our thoughts. We dream their dreams, and uphold their ideals. They remain a part of all we dare and all we do. And they live on in the ideas and values, preferences and pleasures, which they imparted to us. The placing of their names in this Book, is not our way of remembering them. It is merely our way of reminding the world that we have not forgotten them.”

I believe that this is what you are doing here today. Rather than writing your loved ones names in a book you have written them on marble. You are showing the world that they are not forgotten—43 years later and they are not forgotten.

Jim and Rosemary Shellberg

FAMILY SUPPORT TEAM (FST)…

Being part of NADA's Family Support Team (FST) when a crisis occurs is NOT to provide therapy or counseling, but more like providing first aid for a person or family to which we have been assigned. The first rule of first aid is 'do no further harm'. Having also lost loved ones through a terrible disaster enables the support person to have a common thread of a new tapestry that a person or family will begin to weave making their way on a journey through a disaster. The most important aspect of this journey is for the FST member to realize that each person's or family's tapestry will be different from what the FST member experienced, or other families are experiencing in the same disaster. The role of the FST member is to assist where the person/family needs them.

Our members have so much to offer, and we encourage you to contact NADA to request information about FST. The FST volunteer will learn about the stages of grief for themselves and others, and how to provide the right type of assistance. In the process, members develop their own self-confidence to help with everyday living, and to help when and if we are called to help after a disaster.

CISM training (Criitical Incident Stress Management) is not a requirement for FST, however, we found the training personally very helpful as we have begun to understand the role of assisting a person/family and also how to take care of ourselves in the process. The Red Cross has said that we will be re-traumatized, however they do not realize how strong we are! We encourage others to seek educational training. There are numerous programs offered by CISM, NOVA, and/or the Red Cross that can be of great benefit to us all.

Helen Siebert - FST Team Leader

Educational training updates, about crisis response, can be found on our website. We welcome suggestions about resources in your area. The following ICISF schedule may be helpful to you.

The following Awards will be presented at the Annual Meeting…Join us to recognize people who are making a difference…

NEW! Broadcast Journalism Award – This award was endowed by Cynthia Hamilton, Amanda Myers and Lee Sawyer, in memory of their parents, Conway and Anna Laurie Hamilton who were passengers on ValuJet.

NEW! The ASA 529 Triumph Award – In memory of Atlantic Southeast Airlines flight 529, August 21, 1995, in Carroll County GA. There were 10 fatalities and 9 survivors of this horrific crash. As we know, the crash impacted many more lives. The Award will recognize an ordinary person who performed an extraordinary feat toward aviation safety. This new Annual Award is an opportunity to recognize people involved in ways large and small in aviation. We appreciate the generosity of the anonymous donor.

The Safety Award – Prior recipients include: Jim Hall, former NTSB Chair, Mary Schiavo, Ed Block (wiring/cable expert), and Tom O’Mara (to recognize his work toward organizing the first family air crash group meetings, and much more). Special thanks to Art and Carole Rietz, and Paul and Susan Smith for endowing the award in memory of their sons Howard Rietz and Jay Smith.

Air Safety Journalism Award – Prior recipient Byron Acohido. Special thanks to the law firm of Corboy & Demetrio for endowing this important award.
